Psychological Safety – MYTH #3

MYTH #3: “Having Psychological Safety means we always agree and never have intense discussions.”
It is actually quite the contrary!
“No one can put in their best performance unless they feel SECURE. ‘SE-‘ in Latin means ‘without’ and ‘-CURE’ means ‘fear or care.’ Drive Out Fear! We must be unafraid to express ideas and ask questions.”
-W. Edwards Deming
For Psychological Safety to be present, VOICE is essential.
And VOICE is invited – even, and perhaps especially, differing voices.
When brought with mutual respect and care, plurality and diversity of perspective makes us better equipped to face the fierce and shifting sands of the business environment we find ourselves in.
None of us have all the answers.
None of us can see every angle.
We need all voices and all brains fully engaged as we face our greatest challenges.
So, agree on protocols for brining up hard conversations; for bringing dissenting voices into the mix.
All in a healthy way.
And together face your greatest challenges head on!
